Our Affliction (2)-Jocks and Lockers

Welcome back Weekend Writing Warriors! It’s time for another round of 8-10 line snippets. If you’re new then I suggest visiting the participants for a chance to discover something and someone new!

This weekend we introduce the main character: Conor. He’s a star player on Esterhaven’s rugby team. The snippet takes place after practice while the team is in the locker room. Lucas, his friend (and now roommate) rejoins the team after his academic suspension was lifted.

Snippet:
The changing room is a buzz with chatter and laughter. I shield myself behind the locker door as I change while Lucas struts from the shower with a brown towel around his waist. As I pull off the sweaty jersey he points to my arm:
“What’s that? When did you get a tattoo?”
My gut sinks and I feel my face redden. I’m usually more careful. It’s not a tattoo… let alone a birthmark. It’s a strange padlock shape on my arm that appeared once and never left. I don’t even remember what I was doing when it appeared but I cried as it burned into my flesh.
“Wow Conor got a tattoo!” Matty, the first year, announced to everyone.
“I would get my money back Conor, that looks like a drunk did it,” Lucas adds

Well that’s it for now, visit next week to get more locker room talk. Stay safe and see you soon!

Story Synopsis:
Memories. An Inspiration. A Curse.
Between sports, school work, his tutoring and being the family peacekeeper, Conor has no time to dwell on the past. But when a new girl arrives to Esterhaven in the middle of first semester she not only brings the heart wrenching past to life but also unlocks a danger seething inside him.

Natalie, having limited contact with people her age, struggles with adopting to life at the prestigious boarding school. She longs to live in the moment, meet friends and have hobbies like her peers. But something inside her holds her back. A curse, which plagued her from childhood, challenges her need for normalcy. But when murder interrupts her first week of classes she can’t help but feel responsible. After all, death follows her everywhere.

Our Affliction is my current WIP which was created in the vein of Beauty and the Beast meets time travel.

  1. Lord, the pain of the teenage years. Connor’s definitely going to take some ribbing about this “tattoo.” I hope he learns quickly how to adapt to the student’s comments.
