Our Affliction (13)- A Victim Discovered

Greetings Weekend Writing Warriors! Hope you’re all surviving the heat this summer! Thanks for joining me for a new round of the weekly Writing Warriors. It is a special time of the week where writers post 8-10 snippets of their book or WIP for us to read. If you’re visiting for the first time, make sure you check out this week’s participants and make new friends.

Last week we caught a glimpse of Conor’s nightmare (or overactive imagination). This week we are with Natalie who makes a startling discovery about her roommate, Siobhan, the next morning. The character Anne, is Natalie’s new friend and a first year student. Although she doesn’t know it yet, Anne is Conor’s youngest sister.

The morning alarm rips me from my sleep. I drag myself from my bed and notice Siobhan’s sheets haven’t been slept in. My stomach sinks. Something is definitely wrong. I dress, slip my gloves and shoes on, then rush to meet Anne in the common room. There’s a few girls already downstairs whispering with the dorm senior at the entrance. Anne, buried in her thick red scarf pulled to her chin, stands off to the side listening to their conversation. She beckons me over and pushes her round glasses further up her button nose.

“The grounds keeper found a girl this morning. In the bushes by the side of the road.”

This ends the WWW lines. I’m adding a few lines to end the scene:

“Did Siobhan return to the room last night?” she asks.
I shake my head, “is the girl…”
“They’re taking her to the infirmary. Both dorms are locked until they’re gone.”
“Do they know…”
“They won’t say who it is. But I bet it’s Siobhan.”
“What happened?”
“Don’t know, but it sounds serious.”

And End! Well for now. This is an unsettling morning, especially since Natalie searched for Siobhan when she discovered her roommate not in her dorm after curfew. Stop by next week as the mystery unfolds! Until then, stay safe my friends.

  2. Oy! Does not sound good. So many questions. For starters, who did it? And how much danger are the rest of them in? Good snippet. Love the visual of the glasses on the button nose. 🙂

This is quite the cliffhanger! It leaves the reader wondering what happened to her.
